How does it all fit together? Here are six examples of past and ongoing research projects completed by On Point Research.
Targeted Research on a Computer Technology
In preparation for a report on a cutting edge computer technology, a group of market analysts and engineers wanted a broad review of recent research in the field. Information was gathered from industry databases, market research studies, government R&D sources, conference proceedings, the World Wide Web, and phone conversations with industry experts. A 20-page summary was prepared which highlighted new research efforts, key patents, government lab activity, and trends.
Targeted Research – Lessons Learned
An association of cities and counties wanted to compile information on ‘lessons learned’ to share among members. Interviews were conducted with municipal departments on topics such as environmental compliance, waste water treatment, and automated social services. Interview responses were combined with secondary research to prepare briefing packets for association members.
Market Views for SBIR Applicants
A state technology development agency wants to support companies within their state that apply for US Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants. On Point Research is teamed with other business consultants in a state-funded Technology Assistance Program to help the applicants with commercialization planning. Information we provide includes potential addressable market, market trends, business information on competitors, and analysis of competitor R&D and technology.
Market View for a Sensor Manufacturer
A sensor manufacturer needed detail about a new market segment in order to complete a plan that would allow them to obtain investment funding to expand their operations into a new industry. Data was gathered on the overall market size, top five companies already in the sector, units sold in various product categories, current prices, and growth forecasts. The company was able to plan its market entry and increase its chance for success in the new sector.
Market View with Market Voices
For a New England firm reviewing semiconductor inspection tools, we worked with a colleague specializing in in-depth telephone interviews. We called distributors and other industry experts to learn more about recent industry trends, to assess customer interest, and to test potential price points. This third party telephone research helped reveal data on the realities of sales and distribution in the sector and added “on the ground” information on industry trends.
Research Starter for an Aquaculture Firm
A seafood marketing firm wanted a quick look at how other industries market and brand commodity products. We gathered 5-10 articles, suggested websites where case studies in other food sectors could be browsed, and provided contact information for selected associations for their further research. As the firm moves forward with a business development project they will seek a full Market View of selected market entry points, but the initial Research Starter was enough for them to develop an initial business strategy.
